Region Of The Week: Pfalz
Pfalz, or Palatinate in English, is the second largest wine region in Germany, spanning across 23,600 hectares. It’s home to the world’s largest wine barrel, the world’s largest wine festival, the world's oldest wine, and the first and best-known wine route, Deutsche Weinstraße.
Located between the Rhein River and the Haardt mountain range, Pfalz has a relatively warm, sunny, and dry climate, with the mountains casting a rain shadow over the region. Also bordering Alsace, the two regions are very similar in terrain and climate, but Pfalz tends to gear towards drier wines. While Pfalz mainly focuses on classic varietals like Riesling, they also produce stunning wines made from: Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Dornfelder, Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), and Portugieser.
