From Rare to Well-Done: Our Picks for Labor Day Entertaining
This summer has been all about fun in the sun (and somedays, the A/C). But there's no need to say goodbye to summer just yet. From tasty Tempranillo blends and sunny skin-contact sippers from Spain, and elegant Italian bubbles, our team has been hard at work sourcing the very best bottles from around the world to accompany everything on your holiday weekend menu. Check them out!
Redentore Brut Rose Prosecco
Bubbles make the most of any occasion, even more so if there's cheese involved. Redentore Brut Rose Prosecco, from fourth generation winemaker Alessandro De Stefani, is fruity and soft, with notes of pear, raspberries, strawberries, cherries, and fresh flowers, mainly of acacia. Medium-bodied and full of personality — just like our very own cashier Miguel (right) and cheesemonger Archie (left). Archie recommends paring this perfectly pink sparkler with Piave Vecchio or Von Trapp Farmstead Savage cow's milk cheeses.
Bodegas Maisulan 12 Tempranillo Graciano 2019
Our head butcher Phil has no shortage of ideas for the grill. After all, his department is loaded with fresh steaks, burgers, ribs, and housemade sausages. Luckily, this blend of Tempranillo and Graciano is as versatile as it is smoothly elegant, with notes of red and black berries, black plum, fennel, and black pepper spice.
Nals Margreid 'Galea' Schiava 2022
Let's "grill" down to the details, shall we? When it comes to ribs, Phil says, "you need a wine that goes toe-to-toe with the texture without overwhelming the texture of the meat." We couldn't agree more, which is why we love this Schiava (aka Vernatsch) from Alto Adige. Light ruby in the color, this wine is savory and lush, with supple tannins and notes of strawberry bramble, baking spice, and smoke that make it the perfect barbecue juice.
Cambrian Rock First Born Heathcoate Shiraz 2020
But never fear, burger fans! Heathcoate, Australia, is home to some of the best Shiraz in the world, including this bold and spicy, entry from the team at Cambrian Rock. Filled with ripe black and red fruit, tobacco, rosemary, and mocha, this red has chewy tannins and lingering finish that makes it a great partner for lamb burgers, brisket burgers, and even savory mushroom burgers.
Pares Balta Materia Prima Orange 2022
Michele, General Manager of Wine & Spirits is a big fan of this sunny all-natural orange wine from Spain. "It's bold and fresh, mineral and clean, but delicate enough to not overpower food," she says. Bursting with hints of candied citrus, white peach, and cantaloupe, Michele recommends this multifaceted crusher all year long with seafood, pork tenderloin, grilled chicken or even veggie skewers.
Empire Estate Dry Riesling 2019
Experts and wine geeks across the globe hail Riesling as King Grape, and it's easy to see why in this bright, laser-sharp entry from New York's Finger Lakes region. Notes of yellow and green apple, tangerine, lime and ginger explode with every sip, all balanced with salty, flinty minerality on the finish. "Bring on the brats," says Michele about this wine's pairing potential.
Bruna 'Le Russeghine' Pigato 2022
You wanna get nuts? Neither do we. However, if you want to take your Labor Day festivities up a notch, you can't beat this beauty from Bruna. 'Le Russeghine' is the first-known single-vineyard Pigato (aka Vermentino) from Liguria, first produced by Riccardo Bruna in 1972. Savory and complex, with aromatic hints of yellow peach, almonds, white flowers, dried sage, and citrus peel, all backed by a lightly smoky, stony finish. This a beautiful wine for salads, grilled veggies, fish, and your favorite cheese and charcuterie.
