Region Of The Week: Steiermark

The smallest wine region in Austria, Steiermark (Styria) spans across 5,100 hectares of hills and steep slopes, taking advantage of the copious amount of sunlight and winds. With a Mediterranean climate, Steiermark has really warm days and cold nights, as the steep hillsides create a cooling effect on the vineyards. Steiermark is mainly known for its white wine with a small amount of red wine production. Their top five varietals are Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, Weißburgunder, Muskateller, and Blauer Wildbacher.

Weingut Tement

Tement is, without question, one of the benchmark wine producers in Austria, specifically in the subregion of Südsteiermark, or South Styria. This is largely due to the work of Manfred Tement, who steered the winery toward organic and biodynamic practices. They specialize in white wines that speak to the essence of this unique region.
