Producer Spotlight: Matias Riccitelli

As we transition from summer to fall, days spent at the beach and in the park slowly give way to excursions outside the city to see the leaves change color and visit apple orchards. The weather (ideally) gets a little cooler and everyone is eager to catch up after their whirlwind summer. The only thing missing is great wine. Luckily, we’re highlighting Matias Riccitelli’s wines this September that are the perfect accompaniment to any social gathering.

Matías Riccitelli was born in Cafayate, Salta, a village in northern Argentina. After traveling the world through multiple harvests, gaining experience and anecdotes, he decided to blend everything he learned throughout his career with the teachings of his mentor and father, Jorge Riccitelli. Thus, in 2009, Riccitelli Wines was born. The winery is in Las Compuertas, the highest area of Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza with their vineyards situated in the region’s best terroirs.

In 2015, Matías and his team brought “Riccitelli Patagonia” to life, along the banks of the Río Negro, with the aim of revitalizing forgotten grape varietals and old vineyards that withstand the test of time. In this region, they farm 17 hectares that were planted in the 1950s, focusing on several cool-climate varietals such as Pinot Noir, Bastardo, and Semillon.

Enthusiastic about honoring Argentina’s wine heritage, Matias has said, “I’m very passionate about my country and the potential that we have. It’s not only about Malbec for me—it’s about showing everyone our potential.”

Check out these two wines from Matias’ “The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree” line:

"Just as an apple can't fall far from a tree, a wine cannot be made without a story. My winemaking reflects what I was taught by my family and reflects the passion that characterizes each one of us." -- Matias Riccitelli

Malbec 2025

This Malbec is sourced from calcareous soils in Uco Valley and loamy clay soils in Lujan de Cuyo. Hand-harvested and fermented with some whole clusters, the wine is aged in small concrete vats until the next harvest. A deep violet in the glass, this Malbec offers tantalizing aromas of red fruits, vanilla, and chocolate. This red wine is complex and rich with soft, ripe tannins and a fresh long finish. This medium-bodied wine pairs fantastically with grilled meats, pasta, and soft cheeses. Practicing organic.

Torrontes 2024

Made from 40-year-old vines grown in clay and rocky soils in Uco Valley, this Torrontes is hand-harvested and macerated on the skins for 48 hours. Fermented with indigenous yeast and aged in concrete eggs for six months, the result is a crisp and refreshing white wine with inviting aromas of citrus and white florals. The palate is awash with bright notes of stone fruit, grapefruit zest, tropical fruits, and slight minerality. Enjoy it on its own as an aperitif or alongside spicy fare, seafood, and mild cheeses. Practicing organic.
