Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Julien Barrot' Rouge 2022
750ml
Sourced from several parcels of old vines averaging 70 years in age, the 2022 Domaine La Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Julien Barrot is a Grenache-led blend (~60-63%) rounded out with Mourvèdre, Syrah, and a handful of supporting varieties including Counoise, Cinsault, and Clairette Rose. Raised in a mix of cement, smaller casks, and demi-muids and coming in at a full 15% alcohol, it opens with a deep ruby/plum color and a wonderfully complex nose of ripe black cherries, black raspberries, fruitcake, lavender, violet, licorice, garrigue, bonfire, and dark earthy undertones. The palate is plush and inviting, with a juicy fruit core, bright acidity, firm but polished tannins, and a long, complex finish with just a touch of warmth. This is a big, structured wine that still has some growing up to do — give it 2–4 years in the cellar and it will reward your patience handsomely, drinking beautifully for a decade or more beyond that.
