Grifalco
Basilicata, located on the upper foot of Italy’s boot, is home to some of the most distinctive and ageworthy wines in the country. This is due to the exceptional terroir, mineral rich volcanic soils near the now-dormant Monte Vulture. The stunning wines of Grifalco are no exception. Founded in 2004 by Fabrizio and Cecilia Piccin, who were in search of a new project after producing Nobile de Montepulciano in Tuscany for 20 years. They settled on the exceptional terroir of Basilicata and the late-ripening Aglianico, one of southern Italy’s most noble grapes. Today, the 16 hectares of vineyards of Grifalco are farmed organically and deeply rooted in the volcanic soil of Vulture on hillsides between 450 and 580 meters above sea level, with vines up to 80 years old. Each parcel is harvested and vinified separately, creating wines that stay true to their distinct terroir. About 70,000 bottles are produced annually and made into four cuvées. The estate is now managed by the duo’s sons, Lorenzo and Andrea Piccin. Lorenzo is a trained oenologist and oversees the winemaking, while Andrea conducts the commercial operations.
