This singularly elegant and graceful blend of biodynamic Tempranillo and Graciano hails from Rioja Alavesa in northern Spain. Produced by Eva Fernández and Luis Ruiz de Viñaspre, “a crazy couple in love” with nature, with their land in Rioja, and with each other, the nose is soft and full of ripe red and black berries, plums, fennel and black pepper. The palate is medium-full and dry, with a silky texture that delivers additional notes of black cherry cola and savory herbs. Bright and fresh, this is a great summer red, perfect for rice dishes, burgers, and even kebabs.

Bodegas Maisulan is a project by Eva Fernández and Luis Ruiz de Viñaspre, “a crazy couple in love” with nature, with their land in Rioja, and with each other. Based in Rioja Alavesa, the northernmost subregion of Rioja, in a corner of the land protected by the great Sierra Cantabria, Maisulan’s motto, “Cariño. Respeto. Trabajo.”, speaks to the principles used to develop their wines — care for the land, respect for the rich winegrowing tradition of Rioja, and the dedication of Fernandez and Viñaspre to protect and preserve their environment. In their words: “These are the values that make us get up and go to work everyday, and this is the lifestyle that makes [our] wines so characteristic, wines that express the unique identity of this region in each and every vine.” Bodegas Maisulan practices not only biodynamic farming, but also the minimalist intervention philosophies of Masanobu Fukuoka.
