Region Of The Week: Heathcote

What was once a bustling town full of settlers looking for gold, has instead become a region known for its red wine. A subregion of Victoria, Australia, the first vineyards in Heathcote were planted by a German settler in the 1850s, but were eventually destroyed during the phylloxera epidemic. Left with a smattering of vines, it wasn’t until a hundred years later that Heathcote was recognized for their stunning wines. Now spread across 1,836 hectares, Heathcote is a hilly region with a temperate climate and cool mountain winds. Heathcote is mainly known for its Shiraz, but also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Grenache.
