Grape Of The Week: Welschriesling
Don’t let the name fool you — Welschriesling has no relation to Germany’s star varietal, Riesling. Instead, Welschriesling is believed to have originated from Northern Italy, known there as Riesling Italico. Mainly found in Austria, it also grows in Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia, and Croatia. Occasionally blended with Chardonnay, Welschriesling produces fantastic single varietal wines that can be either dry or sweet. With notes of green apple, citrus, stone fruit, and flowers, Welschriesling is great alongside seafood, grilled chicken, and summer fare.
Heidi Schrock & Sohne 'More Is More' Welschriesling 2022
This is “one for the wild and thirsty ones,” to quote winemaker Heidi Schrock. You know, the folks who love fun, fresh, and easy-drinking whites like this charmer. Offering notes of citrus, apple, and a bouquet of fresh white flowers and hay, this 100% Welschriesling is simply a fantastic, unfussy, and unforgettable wine. Try it with fish, grilled chicken, or Salade Nicoise.
