This organic white is a gem in every case of the word. Viognier is not permitted in the Costières de Nîmes as a single varietal wine, however the innovative winemakers behind Domaine Gassier are making a very strong case for that to change with this vivacious, and voluptuous white grown on chalky, limestone soil. Yellow-gold in the glass, the wine opens with intense notes of apricot, tangerine, and a hint of vanilla, resolving into a zesty, zingy finish that makes this a refreshing partner for grilled seafood, sushi, light cream sauces, and a host of cheeses, such as Delice de Bourgogne, Brie, and Comte.

Domaine Gassier

Located in Costières de Nîmes subregion of the Southern Rhône, Domaine Gassier is a  family-owned winery that makes a range of certified organic wines that overdeliver for the price. Helmed by fifth-generation vigneron Michel Gassier with his wife, Tina, and daughter, Isabel, the vineyards and winery are located between two distinct topographical and cultural areas. Avignon, located just to the northwest is the historic heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, where a terroir that includes galets stones adds to the structure and power of the wines. While just to the south is the Camargue, a marshy area near the Mediterranean known for rice production, cattle farming, and wild horses.

In the cellar, Michel and Isabel do everything they can to make balanced and gently extracted wines. Red wines are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts. Primary fermentation for the white wines is encouraged through a pied de cuve, all of which takes place in a mixture of concrete and stainless steel tanks. Isabel has also spearheaded Domaine Gassier’s conversion to regenerative agriculture, a process beyond organic and biodynamic viticulture, in which the goal is to work with nature and build alliances in the vineyard.
