The story of Skinner Vineyards’ Native Red is a tribute to the original brand name of this historic vineyard – J. Skinner Native Wines, originally founded in 1861. This wine is a flirty, mouthwatering expression of the El Dorado terroir. Fresh raspberry and orange peel dominate the aromatics, along with playful notes of sassafras. Crunchy and vivacious across the palate with crushed cranberry, sweet plum, and a whisper of passion fruit. Chillable and sustainably produced, this field blend of Mission, Petite Bouschet, Trousseau, Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, Counoise, Mourvèdre, Marsanne, Zinfandel can be your dinner’s best friend, or simply a way to jazz up a Wednesday evening.

Skinner Vineyards

The original Skinner Ranch, opened in 1861, was located in what is now known as Rescue, CA. The original cellar from the J. Skinner Winery still exists and was home in recent years to the Cameron Park Nursery. In early 2014, Mike and Carey Skinner purchased the property with the goal of preserving it and protecting it from development. The area around Skinners, CA today is paved with vines planted by Mike and Carey, vines that they refer to as Legacy Grapes – including Mission, Zinfandel, Trousseau, Grenache, Carignane and the Skinner clone of Petit Bouschet. “From what we’ve learned about James Skinner,” says Mike, “he was a very forward-thinking guy. We really believe he’d like what we’ve done with the heritage he left us.” Skinner wines are all about tipping a brim to the wines of the Old World while embracing the glorious mountain terroir of El Dorado County.
