Castell d’Or
Castell d’Or is a group of cooperative wineries that grew out of the devastation that Phylloxera, a vine-eating louse wreaked across the world in the late 1800s. A strategy of mutual support between Catalan landowners and small growers, this model revolutionized winemaking in the area. This recovery was symbolized in art and engineering in the form of the “cathedrals of wine,” giant facilities created by modernist architects in service to the areas recovering wine industry. Castell d’Or is a result of more than 100 years of mutual support and winemaking know-how passed down from generation to generation. Today the organization consists of 16 Cooperatives, whose members represent more than 2,200 families involved in sustainable agriculture, working more than 6,200 hectares of vineyards in Catalunya.
