Weis Vineyards
Hans Peter Weis is the seventh generation in his family to make wine; however, he’s the first to make wine outside of the Mosel. Born and raised in Germany, Weis first came to the U.S. to produce wine in Sonoma, CA. A friend working at the renowned Dr. Konstantin Frank winery encouraged Peter to visit the Finger Lakes on his way back to Europe. Weis fell in love with weather and the terroir and never left. For the following 10 years, Peter managed production at Dr. Konstanin Frank, learning and refining his love of winemaking all the while. In 2016, Peter and his wife Ashlee, a Hammondsport native and fellow winemaker, had an opportunity to buy their own vineyard on Keuka Lake from retiring winemakers. The couple took a leap of faith and produced their first vintage that year. The precision and elegance of the wines were well received by critics almost immediately, and within a few short years the duo had opened a tasting room and planted their first estate vineyard, Day Road. Today, Weis Vineyards has emerged as one of the most exciting wineries in the Finger Lakes, with accolades in Forbes, and other major publications.
