Jean Laurent

Blanc de Blancs Champagne 1989

$260

The Laurent family is one of the oldest and finest winegrowers in the region. Its history is linked to that of a small village in the Côte des Bar, south of Champagne, Celles-sur-Ource. Originally, Athanas Laurent settled there in 1850 as a producer of champagne, sold at the time to merchants. This bottling, made from Chardonnay, hails from the superlative 1989 vintage, which was held in barrel for nearly 30 years, until we ordered it directly from the estate. In the glass, this champagne is medium-straw to gold in color, with notes of praline, golden pear, toasted brioche and button mushroom, backed by refreshing acidity and minerality. An unforgettable treat!

Jean Laurent

Jean Laurent's family has been growing wine in the village of Celles-sur-Ource for more than 1,000 years. The estate is situated in the Aube, an outlying Champagne district south of Marne that shares the same chalky soils as the heart of Champagne and Chablis. Jean farms a total of 39 acres, split between Pinot Noir (30 acres) and Chardonnay (9 acres), with no Pinot Meunier. Though the Aube is unquestionably Pinot Noir territory and his flagship wine is the Blanc de Noirs, Jean has enjoyed spectacular success with his Blanc de Blancs, and is planting/purchasing more Chardonnay vines to meet demand.

Jean makes Champagnes exclusively from his own vineyards, and is a prime example of how deeply traditional winemaking, estate-grown fruit, small-batch vinification, and a fanatical devotion to quality can result in distinctive Champagnes of individuality and character.
