Los Bermejos

Malvasía Volcánica Seco 2023

750ml
$25

This textured, crisp and mineral white is produced from Malvasía Volcánica, a grape that is truly indigenous to the Canary Islands and its unique terroir. A volcanic explosion that lasted from 1730-1736 covered the entire island in lava and ash 3-5 meters deep. The volcanic ashes (also called “picon”) that cover the topsoil help retain water and protect the delicate vines from from the scorching sun. This entry, from winemaker Ignacio Valdera, is fascinatingly crisp and bright, with lush floral notes and hints of white peach and Asian pear on the palate, backed by a mouthwatering, salty finish. This is a great partner for fish and shellfish, rice dishes and grilled chicken.

Los Bermejos

Untamed, post-apocalyptic, extreme, savage — these are just  few words that have been used to describe the landscape of Lanzarote, the easternmost of the Canary Islands, 125 km off the coast of Africa. A volcanic explosion that lasted from 1730-1736 covered the entire island in lava and ash 3-5 meters deep.  Consequently, each vine must be planted in a hole that breaks through that infertile volcanic crust the nourishing organic matter. It is here that winemaker Ignacio Valdera is making exceptional organic wines, using solely sustainable practices and frankly, sheer will. The flora on Lanzarote  – including the vines – cannot grow up very high and yields are tiny, yet packed with flavor. All vineyard work is done meticulously by hand. Some of the wines are certified organic, depending on the vintage. Ignacio supplements his crop with purchased fruit from growers who share his vision of sustainable viticulture. Says Ignacio: “ Grapes are everything to us. At Bermejos, we treat the grapes with the utmost respect, knowing the work and effort that goes into their care while acknowledging the enormous generosity with which nature gives them to us.”
