La Kiuva

La Kiuva

Founded in the late 1970s, La Kiuva is a cooperative winery in Italy’s Valle d’Aosta with 50 grower members. The name La Kiuva comes from a term used in the region to describe a “sheaf of leaves” typically gathered in the fall to feed livestock. It’s also a play on the Italian chi uva meaning literally “who grape.” With some of the highest-elevated vineyards in the world — indeed, most of the cooperative’s 15 hectares are so steep they are inaccessible by tractors — the member growers of La Kiuva are devoted to the cultivation of uniquely regional varietals, such as Picotendro, a local clone of Nebbiolo. A favorite among wine critics, La Kiuva is known for the freshness and wonderful drinkability.
