Domaine Amelie & Charles Sparr
Amélie and Charles Sparr are Alsatian through and through, both born into winegrowing families. The Sparr family has farmed the region since 1634, making Charles the 12th generation, and his great-grandfather was Pierre Sparr, a celebrated négociant. When the Pierre Sparr brand was sold to a local co-op in 2007, the family's vineyards were split among Charles's cousins and uncle. In 2010, he purchased more land from his family and immediately converted it to organic farming. He and his partner Amélie launched their eponymous winery in 2013, selling to négociants at first before bottling their own wine starting with the 2017 vintage.
Charles and Amelie’s work centers on the vineyard. They train a high canopy for greater photosynthesis, channeling more energy into the fruit, and rely on plant-based treatments like nettle, chamomile, dandelion, and horsetail, turning to copper and sulfur only when mildew demands it. Harvest is done entirely by hand, in small bins, to keep the grapes whole on their way to the winery.
