Black Dirt Distillery
Black Dirt Distillery was founded in 2012 by co-founders and managing partners Jason Grizzanti and Jeremy Kidde, two long-term veterans of the craft distilling business. As the first micro-distillery in New York State, and over the last decade, they have produced and distributed a number of award winning brandies and liqueurs. Using ingredients sourced directly from the Black Dirt region, these entrepreneurs are not just honoring this area’s singular distilling heritage, but also creating some of the most vibrant spirits to emerge on the market in generations.
The Black Dirt region of New York State, also known as the Drowned Lands, consists of the remains of a shallow lake that formed 12,000 years ago during the glacial period. The ebony soil is so rich and unique — in some areas it’s comprised of nearly 90-percent organic matter — it is known as some of the most fertile soil in the country. Before Prohibition, the area was home to dozens of applejack distilleries.
