Axel Pauly

Axel Pauly

One of the best, undiscovered young winemakers in Germany, Axel’s cellars are in Lieser, the next village up the Mosel from Bernkastel. Viticulture is sustainable (organic is difficult in this section of the Mosel with such steep vineyards). The striking characteristic of all of Axel’s wines, including his Bernkasteler Kardinalsberg, is the purity, crystalline character, length and minerality of all of his wines.

The Axel Pauly estate cultivates a total area of 9 hectares, the majority of is located at the top sites of Lieserer Niederberg-Helden and Bernkastel-Kueser Kardinalsberg. The vineyards are all facing south or south- west, have a typical slate soil and a slope of up to 80 degrees in steepness! In the cool climate Mosel Region, a long growing season intensifies the fruit and makes the wine extreme fruity, enriched by mineral nuances of the stony soil, the wines are always light in the alcoholic scale.
