Region Of The Week: Casablanca Valley

Nestled in between the coastal mountains and the Pacific ocean, Casablanca Valley spans across roughly 5,000 hectares in central Chile. Its first vines were planted in the 1980s, but water restriction and lack of irrigation prevented the vineyards from expanding. While most Chilean regions are pretty warm, Casablanca Valley has a cool-climate with a Pacific maritime influence. The lower and cooler areas lends itself to producing vibrant and mineral white wines like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Gewurztraminer, while red wine varietals like Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Syrah grow in the higher and warmer elevated areas.

Prisma Pinot Noir 2022

Prisma, a collaborative project from Brazos and Grupo Belen, was founded with the goal of showing off the true expression of the unique terroir of Chile’s Casablanca Valley. The estate consists of multiple vineyards including some of the original plantings in Casablanca by Pablo Morande in 1982. The cool misty nights, hot sunny days, and light hand of Jorge Martinez, the winemaker, act as a prism to convert the grape into a complex and beautiful wine. The Prisma Pinot Noir shows bright red fruit notes of strawberry and cherry, with an underlying hint of oak, that leads to a lifted mid palate and smooth, velvety finish.
