Presidential Cheers: Hail to the Hooch!
Some say President's Day is about commemorating the birth of George Washington and learning about past U.S Presidents. Others say it's all about the three-day weekend. We say, why not both? Just in time for the holiday, our in-house "executive branch" matched up several U.S. presidents and some of our favorite wine hailing from their home states. Hail to the hooch!
NEW YORK
Franklin D. Roosevelt - Terrassen Cellars Cabernet Franc 2018
“Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort." This quote from the 32nd president perfectly sums up this elegant Cabernet Franc from the Finger Lakes. Vivid, yet smooth, with bright raspberry and black cherry, balanced with sweet herbs and light cedar notes.
Martin Van Buren - Neversink Spirits Gin
"No evil can result from its inhibition more pernicious than its toleration." This New York State gin is distilled from apples, with notes of cardamom, star anise, elderflower, and citrus. It's pure class and friendly to the environment, too. The apples come from local farms. Give martini night a New York twist with this new classic and longtime Greene Grape staff pick fave.
CALIFORNIA
Richard M. Nixon - Flying Cloud Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
"If you take no risks, you will suffer no defeats. But if you take no risks, you win no victories." While several former presidents have called California home, only Richard Nixon was born there. While Nixon's presidency was known for controversy, this red is really honest and a straight shooter, with notes of boysenberry, cedar, and mulberry. It has impeccable balance and powerful elegance, making it a fantastic representation of California wine.
KENTUCKY
Abraham Lincoln - High West Distillery Double Rye Whiskey
“Whatever you are, be a good one.” Truer words have never been said by Honest Abe, and this rye epitomizes this philosophy. High West is a refreshingly bright and bold whiskey, with complex notes of anise, juniper and spiced rose, combined with more traditional rye spices of clove and nutmeg.
VERMONT
Chester A. Arthur - Papilio
"Men may die, but the fabrics of free institutions remains unshaken." In true Vermont fashion, this Agave-based spirit is fermented with a hint of maple syrup fermented with it, giving the spirit nuance and a clean palate without any added sweetness. With smoky-sweet notes delicately rounded by citrus and fruit for a truly unique, exceptionally smooth experience.
