Grape Of The Week: Pecorino
Not to be confused with the cheese, Pecorino is an aromatic white wine varietal that is native to Italy. It tends to showcase notes of tropical fruit, citrus, dry herbs, and minerality, making it an excellent pairing with pork, hard cheeses, and seafood.
Thought to have originated in Marche centuries ago, Pecorino is mainly found in Abruzzo thriving in the high mountain altitudes, hillside slopes, and coastal influences. Pecorino’s name comes from the Italian word “pecora,” which means sheep. It is believed that as herds would pass through Abruzzo, the sheep would graze on the Pecorino grapes since they were the ripest and sweetest.
Nestore Bosco Pecorino Linea Classica 2022
The Nestore Bosco winery is home to this elegant Pecorino, straw yellow and golden in the glass, with notes of citrus, lychee and honeysuckle. Refreshing and balanced, it finishes with persistence and a hit of apricot and salinity. Try it with cheese, salmon or cod wrapped in parchment paper.
