J. Hofstatter Weissburgunder 2021

$21
Weissburgunder is the German name for Pinot Bianco, or Pinot Blanc, and this entry from one of Alto Adige's hallmark producers is graceful, lively and floral. Medium straw yellow in the glass, the wine offers hints of yellow apple and pear alongside peach blossoms. Bright and refreshing, with a touch of hazelnut on the finish, this wine pairs beautifully with a host of appetizers, salads, and fish.

J. Hofstatter

Josef Hofstätter, a trained locksmith, operated a small restaurant in Tramin together with his wife Maria and produced wine in their cellar. He founded a winery in 1907 and successfully traded wine. Josef Hofstätter passed away childless in 1942 and his wife continued to run the business, assisted by their long-time employee, Konrad Oberhofer. Oberhofer later married Maria Hofstätter’s niece, Luise, and eventually took over management of the winery. As a pioneer of quality wine production in Alto Adige, Konrad Oberhofer bottled his own wines instead of selling them in bulk. He also began to vinify single-vineyard wines. With this he lay the cornerstone for the philosophy of winemaking at Tenuta J. Hofstätter. Today it stands proudly as the only family-owned winery in this region to have vineyards on both sides of Adige River, carrying forward a rich legacy of winemaking.
