Quinta da Raza
The beginnings of Quinta da Raza are to be found in a famous manor house in Veade, Celorico de Basto, known as ‘A Casa do Outeiro’, of probable medieval origin and classified as a local landmark since 1977. The first known owner of Casa do Outeiro was Francisco Gonçalves, at the beginning of the 17th century. The current family’s ownership of the site known as Raza – known as such because it is a considerably flat area, whose surroundings are quite hilly and mountainous – has been documented since 1769, although the actual ownership of the land probably dates back to earlier time. The current configuration of the Outeiro house dates back to the 19th century, and is the result of a reconstruction that took place after the great fire of 1860 that left the building practically destroyed. Quinta da Raza is considered to be a “daughter” or “successor” of Casa do Outeiro, and the current owners are fifth generation winemaker Diogo Teixeira Coelho and his partner Mafalda Teixeira Coelho. Today the property extends across 14 vineyards and 50 hectares at an average of 250m above sea level. It is nestled between the Tamega river valley and the Serra do Marão mountain range. Quinta da Raza is the first estate in the Vinho Verde Region to be certified with the National Sustainability Standard for the Wine Sector from ViniPortugal.
