Domaine La Barroche

Domaine la Barroche is a family estate that has been passed down from one generation to the next since the 14th century and it is now managed by sister and brother team, Laetitia and Julien Barrot. Their father, Christian Barrot, is passionate about viticulture and has taken meticulous care of the family’s 12.5 hectare of vines since the early 1970’s. Until Julien joined his father back in 2002, all of the wine had been sold in bulk to negociants. Now, half of the Grenache vines are more than 100 years-old and are some of the oldest found in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Julien has moved to completely organic viticulture (not certified) and his father is still following his passion and continues to work in the vineyards. Taking all of his father’s work to the next level, Julien is now vinifying each grape variety and some parcels separately, studying and learning his holdings parcel by parcel. According to Julien, “You cannot make a great wine without a great terroir, and a great terroir is nothing without the winemakers love for his vines.”

Sourced from several parcels of old vines averaging 70 years in age, the 2022 Domaine La Barroche Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Julien Barrot is a Grenache-led blend (~60-63%) rounded out with Mourvèdre, Syrah, and a handful of supporting varieties including Counoise, Cinsault, and Clairette Rose. Raised in a mix of cement, smaller casks, and demi-muids and coming in at a full 15% alcohol, it opens with a deep ruby/plum color and a wonderfully complex nose of ripe black cherries, black raspberries, fruitcake, lavender, violet, licorice, garrigue, bonfire, and dark earthy undertones. The palate is plush and inviting, with a juicy fruit core, bright acidity, firm but polished tannins, and a long, complex finish with just a touch of warmth. This is a big, structured wine that still has some growing up to do — give it 2–4 years in the cellar and it will reward your patience handsomely, drinking beautifully for a decade or more beyond that.

Sourced from an iron-rich, sandy clay plot near the famed Château Rayas that's been planted since the 14th century — this is Julien Barrot's passion project, 15 years in the making. Pale yellow with silver highlights, it opens up with a fresh, inviting nose of white flowers, fennel, star anise, and subtle spice. The palate is silky and elegant without being heavy, with a lovely mineral crispness and real energy that carries all the way through to a long, lively finish. Aged 15 months in demi-muids on its lees, it hits that sweet spot between finesse and freshness that's so hard to nail in a southern Rhône white. With 2024 shaping up as a standout vintage for whites in the region, this should be a particularly bright and lifted bottling — pop it in a decanter for a few minutes before serving and watch it really come alive.
