The Sparr family has farmed the region since 1634, making Charles the 12th generation, and his great-grandfather was Pierre Sparr, a celebrated négociant. When the Pierre Sparr brand  was sold to a local co-op in 2007, the family's vineyards were split among Charles's cousins and uncle. In 2010, he purchased more land from his family and immediately converted it to organic farming.
